Nelson Mandela

[Information sources: Wikipedia & Brittanica]

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid political leader who was President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

He studied at the South African Native College (later the University of Fort Hare) and later studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand and soon became a lawyer.

He was in prison for 27 years (1962-1990) and was split between Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison.

On May 10, 1994 he was elected president of South Africa. In 2008 there were many celebrations of Mandela in South Africa, Great Britain and many other countries in honour of his 90th birthday.

Mandela Day is an annual celebration of Mandela’s birthday. It was first observed on July 18, 2009. Later that year, it was declared that the day would be observed annually as Nelson Mandela International Day.

Today is Mandela Day, and we remember Nelson Mandela on his birthday.
